Trench Blasting: Precision Blasting for Utilities and Infrastructure

What Is Trench Blasting? A Guide for Utility Infrastructure

Learn about trench blasting methods used for pipe installations and utility trenches in civil engineering.

Trench blasting is an essential blasting technique used to excavate narrow, elongated trenches for installing utility lines such as water, sewer, and communication pipes. These trenches, typically less than 4 meters wide, require precise blasting due to limited space and the need to protect surrounding areas.

Two main trench blasting methods are commonly used:

  1. Traditional trench blasting
  2. Smooth wall trench blasting for reduced overbreak

Blasters carefully select drill hole diameters and explosive loads to avoid uncontrolled damage and ensure clean trench profiles.

Best Practice Tip: Use a hole diameter equal to 1/60 of the trench width for optimal energy distribution and minimal rock displacement.
